Digital Off-line Editing

More and more, digital off-line editing suites are being used for film editing. They greatly increase the speed, accuracy and flexibility of operations such as insert and assembly editing, overlay, special effects and titling.

A further major advantage relates to image quality. Despite an initial loss of quality inherent in the digitisation process, once digitised any further processing of the film image will carry no loss of quality. The latter is a great improvement over traditional-film editing techniques, where each new generation of film that results from the editing process brings with it a degeneration in the image quality.

Being able to output film as a digital file format is particularly advantageous in the production of interactive CD media. Laserdisc production still requires mastering from Betacam SP or other professional analogue film standard.
