The Production Assistant

The role of the Production Assistant

The role of the production assistant is to assist in the production process, working to the production manager. Theirs is a jack-of-all-trades part in production, dealing with matters which are specific to a particular project: checking up on the hire of equipment (generators for outside photo shoots, say); sourcing costumes for actors in period studio shoots; finalising room-booking arrangements; making appointments for photo shoots. The production assistant might not be responsible for identifying all the small points that need to be catered for in any aspect of the production process, but will usually be directed to oversee the small details necessary to ensure the smooth running of those aspects of the production process which involve outside resources, talent or activities, or interdisciplinary team activities.

They will be working closely with all the members of the production team. It is convenient if the content researcher has also the skills required of a good production assistant because, once the content research phase has been completed and the production phase entered into, the same person can be retained within the team. In that way, the intimate knowledge of production assets, objectives and team workings that they have built up in the planning and research phase will not be lost.

Personal Skills and Qualities of the Production Assistant

The skill of the production assistant correspond largely with those of the research assistant. They should be a creative and highly motivated individual. A good problem solver is required who sees problems as challenges to be overcome rather than avoided. Good appearance, since they will be representing the company with many outside agencies. They should also possess good (as opposed to excellent, in the case of the researcher) oral and written skills. They should be able to work as a member of a team and to take direction. Able to communicate easily, effectively, persuasively on the phone and in writing. Familiarity with interactive multimedia and basic word-processing skills would be advantageous.
